jayapura is build around and up many steep hills and cliffs.

stone cravings at "doyo lama" village near sentani. a villager told us the story, that all of the stones on the hill are in fact dead people from the village which was here before and some of the stones possess magical powers. for example some of them which are "standing" can be thrown down and they will be magically standing up again the next morning. i'm not so sure about the authenticy of the carvings, they may be quite new too. anyways they are beautiful and the stones serve an important role in the local marriage system as bride prices.
